Mouse Latency & Click Response Test

A browser cannot measure true mouse latency, the time from pressing the button to light changing on the screen. What it can measure is the time from the click event to your code running and to the next frame drawn. This test shows those numbers over 10 clicks, which helps spot a slow or busy computer.

How it works

Point at the grey box and use your mouse there. The page reads your browser’s mouse events and never sends them anywhere.

These tests need JavaScript. The explanations below work without it.

Made for a real mouse. On a phone or tablet, only the click speed test works with touch. In Firefox and Safari a side button may still go back a page; the page tries to stop that.

Click response test

How to do it

  1. Point at the click box.
  2. Click 10 times at an easy pace.
  3. Read the median click to frame time and the range.

What is and is not measured

  • Measured: time from the browser’s click timestamp to the page code, and to the next drawn frame.
  • Not measured: the mouse’s own delay, USB or wireless transfer, and the screen’s response. These need a high-speed camera or special hardware.

Click-to-frame time depends mostly on your screen refresh rate. At 60 Hz a new frame comes about every 16.7 ms, at 144 Hz about every 6.9 ms.

Frequently asked questions

Can a website measure mouse latency?

Only partly. A page sees when the browser received the click and when it drew the next frame. The time inside the mouse, the cable or wireless link and the screen is invisible to it.

Why is the click to frame time around 16 ms?

On a 60 Hz screen the browser draws a new frame about every 16.7 ms, so the wait for the next frame is often in that range. A higher refresh rate screen gives lower numbers.

Does a wireless mouse have more latency?

Modern wireless gaming mice can be very close to wired ones, while some basic Bluetooth mice are slower. This browser test cannot show the difference, because the wireless delay happens before the browser sees the click.

How can I lower input delay?

Use a higher refresh rate screen, close heavy programs and browser tabs, use the mouse’s wired or dedicated wireless mode instead of Bluetooth, and choose a higher polling rate in the mouse software.

What does event to code mean?

It is the time from the click timestamp the browser gave the event to the moment the page code ran. If it is high, the browser or computer is busy with other work.
